U4GM Helldivers 2: What Heavy Gunners Need to Know
On higher difficulties, a Heavy Gunner in Helldivers 2 isn't there to look stylish. You're there to hold the line, cut down waves, and give the squad a few seconds to breathe when everything goes wrong. A setup built around the Gallant, Bushwhacker, Land Mines, Guard Dog backpack, Heavy Machine Gun, Strafing Run, Napalm Strike, and Peak Physique heavy armour gives you that steady pressure. It's also why some players check out Helldivers 2 Items when they want more room to test gear and tweak endgame loadouts without running the same kit forever.
Build Around Constant Pressure
The Heavy Machine Gun is the heart of this playstyle. Don't waste it spraying at every tiny target on screen. Let the Guard Dog chew through light enemies while you focus on Overseers, clustered Illuminate units, and anything trying to rush the team. The Gallant works well when you need cleaner shots, and the Bushwhacker is there for ugly close-range moments. Land Mines are great, but place them where teammates won't wander into them five seconds later. That sounds obvious. It isn't. People step on friendly mines all the time, usually while shouting that they saw them.
Take the Hill, but Don't Trust It
You'll quickly notice that high ground makes life easier. From a ridge or hilltop, you can spot patrols earlier, guide your fire better, and keep enemies from surrounding the squad too quickly. It also gives your machine gun space to work. Still, don't get cocky. Illuminate attacks can knock you sideways, and one bad explosion can send you sliding off a cliff like a dropped lunch tray. Use elevation as an advantage, not as a bunker. If the enemy starts wrapping around both sides, move before the position turns into a grave.
Air Strikes Need a Bit of Respect
Strafing Runs and Napalm Strikes are brilliant when they're called in with a clear lane. They're a nightmare when someone throws them at their own boots because "it looked safe." Before tossing a beacon, check where your squad is, where the enemies are moving, and whether the terrain will funnel everyone into the same burning mess. Napalm is especially rude. It lingers, blocks escapes, and punishes teammates who weren't paying attention. A good Heavy Gunner uses air support to shape the fight, not to create a second emergency for the squad to survive.
Vehicles, Retreats, and Staying Useful
FRVs are handy, but don't fall in love with them. They get shredded by lasers, flipped by chaos, or blown up because someone fumbled a grenade while getting out. Use them to move fast, then accept that they may not come home. The same mindset applies to fights. If ammo is low, stratagems are cooling down, and reinforcements keep spawning, pull back. Heavy armour buys time. It doesn't make you a superhero. Regroup, resupply, reload the Heavy Machine Gun, and come back with the team instead of dying alone in a cloud of purple lights.
Play Like the Squad Depends on You
The best Heavy Gunners aren't just loud. They're aware. They call targets, cover revives, share supplies, and stop firing when a teammate crosses their barrel. Against Illuminate forces, weapons with steady damage, burst potential, and decent penetration usually feel better than gimmicky options. Flamethrowers can be funny, sure, but they're not always reliable into shields and tougher units. If you're experimenting with armour, support weapons, or utility gear, cheap Helldivers 2 Items can help widen your options while you figure out what actually suits your squad's rhythm. Just remember: if a grenade slips out beside the vehicle, run first and explain later.
